Headlamps

Move from a simple AAA light to more adjustment, then an included rechargeable battery. Maximum brightness is not the only useful measure.

BUDGET APPROACH

Use your working flashlight.

Test it in the place you would actually use it. Keep matching spare batteries. Replace it only if it fails the task.

USEFUL UPGRADE

Add a different capability.

A comfortable headlamp or a stable, dimmable lantern may add more utility than a brighter version of the light you already own.

Five checks before buying.

  1. Controls: can you turn it on easily in darkness?
  2. Power: do you have the matching batteries or charging connection?
  3. Runtime: compare the manufacturer’s figure at the setting you intend to use.
  4. Fit and placement: try the strap, grip, stand, or hanging point.
  5. Maintenance: follow storage and battery instructions; test periodically.

These are our selection criteria. The recommendations above apply these criteria using published specifications; they are not hands-on test results.

Choose battery lighting indoors.

Battery flashlights and lanterns reduce the fire risks associated with candles and fuel lighting. Avoid placing any light where someone could trip over it.
