Seasonal readiness
Before the next storm: a small readiness reset
Check what you already have, find the gaps and give each one an owner before bad weather arrives.

Start with a walk-through, not a shopping cart
Choose a quiet day before severe weather is expected. Open the cupboard where your supplies live and check the actual contents. A list you wrote last year is a starting point, not proof that everything is still there.
On paper, make three columns: ready now, needs attention, and someone to contact. Put each gap in one column. This is our suggested organizing exercise, not a complete storm-safety checklist.
Check the essentials you rely on
- Light and contact: try your battery lights, check phone-charging supplies and keep important numbers on paper.
- Food and water: look at your stored supplies and identify what needs replacing.
- Somewhere to go: confirm your household’s destination and help arrangements if home becomes unsuitable.
The Red Cross power-outage guidance covers these preparations. Follow current local alerts and instructions; do not delay an evacuation to complete a checklist.
Turn one gap into one small task
“Improve preparedness” is difficult to finish. “Find the missing lantern cable” is not. Choose a specific task, name the person who will handle it and decide when you will check back. If you live alone, the owner may be you, but confirming outside help can still be part of the task.
Keep your note with the supplies. Next time the forecast gets your attention, you can check what changed instead of starting over.
