PORTABLE · STORED ENERGY
Portable battery power station
- Consider for
- Small plug-in loads and a manageable recharge plan.
- Plan around
- Stored energy runs down; output rating and usable runtime both matter.
HOUSEHOLD PROJECTS
Compare portable power, fuel generators and installed standby systems before requesting quotes.

List the refrigerator, sump or well pump, heating controls, lights and other loads you actually need. Separate essentials from conveniences such as central air conditioning or an electric range. Ask an electrical professional to assess running demand, motor starting demand and which loads may operate together. House size alone cannot settle that decision.
Operate portable generators outdoors only, at least 20 feet from homes and buildings, with exhaust directed away from openings. Never run one in a garage, shed or enclosed shelter, even with doors open. Have working CO alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas. A CO shutoff does not make indoor use safe. Follow CPSC carbon-monoxide guidance.
Never feed power into a wall outlet. Have a qualified electrician specify and install approved transfer equipment for any connection to household wiring. Follow the generator manual for cords, wet weather, cooling before refueling and fuel storage. If your property cannot accommodate safe use, choose a different backup plan.
For a standby system, ask the installer to verify siting and exhaust exposure for your property and neighboring homes. Portable-generator spacing is not a substitute for an engineered standby installation.
Explore Generac home standby systems and its dealer estimate process (opens in a new tab). Generac describes permanently installed systems using natural gas or propane and automatic transfer equipment. Compare itemized local quotes and service arrangements before deciding. This is a manufacturer reference, not a tested recommendation or an affiliate relationship.
Do not assume a large generator will run every load simultaneously or provide uninterrupted electricity. Ask about startup delay and a separate continuity plan for equipment that cannot tolerate interruption.
Make a one-page list of essential loads, your fuel options and where equipment could safely go. Take it to an installer before selecting a model. For smaller needs, start with power and light. Also check household alarms and keep an evacuation plan if remaining home becomes unsafe.

Home resilience
Before comparing brands, write down what you need to keep running and the questions an installer must answer.

Use our home resilience planning path to define the need, compare the full scope and prepare questions before requesting quotes.
These three 120V choices trade cost, carrying weight and starting convenience. They are not whole-house or 240V substitutes. First confirm outdoor operating space and the running and starting loads you need. Budget, midrange and premium describe spending position, not safety or capability.
A lighter, lower-output choice for a small set of 120V plug-in loads; runs on gasoline or propane.
Recoil start and limited starting capacity. Calculate each motor load before buying.
1,850W running on gasoline; 1,665W on propane; 2,500W starting. 120V only. Manufacturer dry weight: 39 lb. CO Shield is not permission to operate indoors.

105.8 lb dry. This is not a 240V whole-house generator; do not substitute the newer EFI model.
3,900W running / 5,000W peak on gasoline; 3,500W running / 4,500W peak on propane. Manufacturer MSRP $1,299 at review; equipment only. Check emissions eligibility and exact retailer model.

Gasoline only, recoil start and less rated output than the Westinghouse. Higher price does not mean more capacity.
120V; 2,600W rated / 3,200W maximum. MSRP at review: $2,799 for EU3200IAN (49-state), $2,899 for EU3200IAC (50-state). Confirm the regional model; CO-MINDER does not make enclosed use safe.

Compare the Generac Guardian 22kW / 7043 package (opens in a new tab) and Cummins RS20A with a qualified local installer. These are examples for a load assessment, not universal whole-house recommendations. Have each quote identify fuel-specific output, transfer equipment, installation scope, permits and service support.
Installed costs cannot be ranked fairly from equipment prices alone. Compare quotes for the same loads and scope. No affiliate relationship with these manufacturers is implied.
