Go-bags & evacuation

Before packing your go-bag, choose where you would go

Use your destination, transport and personal needs to decide what your bag needs to do.

Give the bag a specific job

It is easy to compare backpacks before deciding what one needs to carry. Try starting with a sentence instead: “If we need to leave home, we plan to go to ___, using ___.” The blanks expose questions that another pocket or gadget cannot answer.

The Red Cross’s household planning guidance includes deciding on destinations and routes, considering alternatives and accounting for pets. Make arrangements ahead of time where possible; an address written on a worksheet is not confirmation that someone can host you.

Think through the journey

Picture getting from your door to that destination. Would you drive, rely on a lift or need assistance? Who would help a child or someone with access needs? What changes if your first transport option is unavailable?

Our suggested worksheet has three short headings: getting there, personal essentials, and what is waiting there. Put a question mark next to anything unconfirmed. For example, “friend can collect us” needs a conversation; “supplies at destination” needs an actual check.

Use the evacuation-planning guide for the wider arrangements. Follow current official instructions during an emergency; do not delay leaving to finish packing.

Pack for the people, then check the load

An existing backpack may suit a small personal load. Start by reviewing the go-bag essentials, then account for clothing, contact information and the individual items your household relies on. Plan medication and care requirements with the relevant provider.

Try the loaded bag somewhere safe before relying on it. Notice whether you can reach important items and manage the bag alongside your usual mobility or caregiving needs. If it is awkward, change the load or the carrying arrangements. There is no single bag size that proves a plan will work.

Keep one unresolved question visible

You do not need to solve every detail today. Confirm one destination or one transport arrangement, and record the answer in the household plan.

If a premade kit interests you later, compare its actual contents with your own requirements. A kit can provide equipment; it cannot confirm your destination or decide what your family needs.
