Know when portable shelter is not enough.

A tarp or tent is not a safe refuge from lightning or severe storms. Leave early for an appropriate substantial building or other official shelter when conditions call for it. Do not use fuel-burning stoves, heaters or generators inside tents or enclosed shelters.

What about building a shelter from branches?

Keep this as optional, supervised outdoor learning after you can pitch a carried shelter. Check land-manager rules before collecting material. Do not cut living trees, excavate a shelter or rely on an untested structure for an overnight stay. A carried tarp is a more repeatable beginner practice project.

Prepare the whole trip.

The NPS Ten Essentials includes portable emergency shelter. For campsite habits, see NPS camping tips. Use the instructions for your exact shelter for pitching. Return to basic bushcraft or plan a practical go-bag.

Three four-person tents to compare

For ordinary camping and practice in suitable weather. These are not shelters from tornadoes, hurricanes or lightning. Four-person ratings do not guarantee room for four people plus gear. Plan bedding and ground insulation separately.
